THE NYSKIES ASTRONOMY SEMINAR
NOTA MAGIS BENE! The Seminars meet on the 1st and 3rd
WEDNESDAY of the month, starting in April 2009. This is because of a change in operating schedule at our host.
Until March 2009 the Seminar convened on Thursdays..
On 2005 March 17 NYSkies opened The NYSkies
Astronomy Seminar. These meetings are informal discussions of current
topics in astronomy. These may include space missions, show & tell,
celestial events, travel and conference reports, and news of other
astronomy activities in and around New York City.
Sessions are on the first and third Wednesdays of each
month from 7:00PM to 9:00PM. Future ones are:

overwhelming circumstance like a transit strike or storm evacuation.
The NYSkies Astronomy Seminar meets at St Paul's
Lutheran Church, 315 West 22nd Street, just off 8th Avenue in Chelsea.
It is next to 23rd St, IND 8th Av (blue) local stop. Nearby are the 23rd
St local stations of the IRT 7th Av (red), IND 6th Av (orange), BMT
Broadway (yellow), and PATH (H&M) lines. The church is a short walk
from the 34th St and 14th St. express stations and Penn Station. Buses
in 23rd and 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th Avs pass close to St Paul's Church.
The formation of The NYSkies Astronomy Seminar came
from the growing desire of NYSkiers and other local astronomers to have
a congenial climate in which to carry on their discussions of astronomy,
to offer a more personal flavor to the Yahoogroups forum, and to give
NYSkies more visibility as an urban astronomy support service.
The NYSkies Astronomy Seminar is open to the public
and is free of charge, there being no formal 'membership' in NYSkies in
the usual sense. It is funded now by generous donations from many
NYSkiers.
The Seminar is usually a round table discussion on
current astronomy topics. Attendees work from magazines, newspapers,
websites, other astronomy meetings for source material.
In the months between school semesters, the Seminar
features a Summer Lecture Series, presented by area astronomers to
explain their projects. This fills in the 'valley' when lectures
elsewhere are on leave. During the school year, occasional special
lectures are offered as the opportunity allows.
The lecture series for 2009 summer is:
June 17 - Dstry Saul, Columbia U, 'The accidental
and amateur discovery of radio astronomy'
July 1 - 'Remembering Apollo'. Audience
show-&-tell of Apollo artifacts and memories, films of early Apollo
flights.
July 15 - Cameron Hummels, Columbia U. 'Will the
world end in 2012?'
August 19 - John Pazmino, NYSkies, 'The
planispheric astrolabe'
September 16 - TENTATIVE - 'Babylonian and Greek
astronomy'
The best and latest news about the Seminar is in
the NYSkies Yahoogroup, where last minute announcements are posted.
If you have an empty Wednesday on your astronomy
calendar, hop a train or bus and ride to the stars with The NYSkies
Astronomy Seminar.
